Usual Suspects at Top of Golf Betting Market

The golf action comes in knock-out form this weekend and it’s the usual suspects that are at the head of the golf betting market once again.

The WGC Accenture Match Play Championship pits the world’s top golfers in a head-to-head knockout situation and unsurprisingly, it’s Tiger Woods who is the golf betting favourite to claim the lion’s share of the $8m purse.

The world number one is the short-priced favourite for this weekend’s golfing showpiece ahead of last week’s Northern Trust Open winner Phil Mickelson, but in the knock-out scenario, golf betting upsets are bound to be on the menu.

Last year he was eliminated from the competition in the third round by current 90-1 shot Nick O’Hern – the same man who eliminated him from the second round in 2005 whilst in 2006, Woods also fell at the third round stage, this time to Chad Campbell. In fact, you have to go back to 2004 for the last time that Woods made it to the final four, the year in which he claimed his second and last WGC Accenture Match Play Championship title.

With the chance of upsets improved, golf betting punters will no doubt be looking around for those big-value bets and defending champion Henrik Stenson could well be one name that is attracting interest.

Stenson’s victory last season was just one of two tournament wins in 2007 and after Woods beat him in the Dubai Desert Classic earlier in the year, will the Swede be out for revenge?

Patriotic punters may opt to place their online golf bet on European Order of Merit winner Justin Rose although Ernie Els, a man who many believe to be the “rightful” winner of last year’s European Tour will also be amongst the busy betting activity.

Padraig Harrington is still looking for his first tournament win since the Open last year; will this week be his week?
