PGA golf betting returns with Vijay out to repeat 2007 success

The Mercedes-Benz Championship signals the start of the PGA Tour and with it, another packed weekend of online golf betting.

Kapalua, Hawaii is the venue for this weekend’s $5.5m event although the tournament hasn’t proved to be quite the draw that it perhaps should have been.

Despite being open only to players that one an event on last season’s tour, golf betting fans expecting to see the world’s best going head-to-head are likely to be disappointed.

World number one Tiger Woods, number two Phil Mickelson, Open winner Padraig Harrington and Australian number one Adam Scott are all missing from the line-up this year, citing the need for a prolonged rest period over the festive period.

That means that defending champion Vijay Singh’s chances of reclaiming his title have received a boost and he, along with Jim Furyk, lead the golf betting market with the Fijian just edging Furyk to claim the tag of favourite.

Singh’s only PGA victory in 2007 aside from last year’s Mercedes-Benz Championship was the Arnold Palmer Invitational back in March although he the world number ten also came on top in the Kolon-Hana Bank Korea Open on the Asian Tour in 2007.

Furyk on the other hand, does have a slight edges on Singh that online golf betting fans may take note of.

The world number three, who won this tournament back in 2001, also won just one PGA event last year, July’s Canadian Open but did so by beating Singh by a single stroke.

Whether that hands Furyk a mental advantage over Singh or whether that makes Vijay keen to avenge that loss is up for debate although golf betting punters seem to be giving Singh the edge.

Another man to look out for is Steve Stricker who many believe to be a good value bet.

The world number five had a strong season in 2007, earning more than $4.6m in prize money, compared to his previous best of $1.67m back in 2001 thanks largely to victory in The Barclay’s back in August and a strong performance in the PGA Playoffs in which he came second behind Tiger Woods.

With many of the big names missing, it is sure to be much more than just a three-way battle although the bulk of the golf betting money will undoubtedly go on the trio of Singh, Stricker and Furyk.

Whether you can’t see past the top three or whether you think that an outsider and cause an upset, log on and find out the latest golf betting odds from Blue Square.
