EPT Dublin – Irish Masters Day 2

109 players returned to the Regency hotel for the second full day of the Pokerstar.com Irish Masters EPT event. It is often the case that many players get eliminated in the early stages of day two and this tournament was no exception. Within two hours only 63 players remained. Amongst those to fall by the wayside early were Flying Dutchman Marcel Luske, Simon ‘Deathstare’ Nowab, Noak Boeken, Nick ‘Not from Nottingham’ Gibson and David ‘Dpommo’ Pomroy.

Leading the way at this stage of the tournament were Marc Goodwin, William Thorsson, Roland de Wolfe and Buddhist monk Andy Black, a local favourite. Also still in contention were Rob Yong, Stuart Fox, Willie Tann, backward chair sitter Nick Slade and plethora of Scandinavians with unpronounceable names.

By the dinner break there were just 41 players left and as usual quite a few bad beats had been dished out along the way to reduce the field to this size. Andy Black, on the feature table, was fortunate to hit a runner-runner flush when facing pocket kings with his pocket nines. That doubled his stack up to around the 200,000 mark and disgusted his opponent, William Thorsson.

“What can I say?” said Black afterwards as he stacked his ill-gotten gains, “I played like a muppet and got lucky”.

The home crowd were delighted. However, a couple of hours later Thorsson exacted his revenge, sending Andy out in 33rd place to became the bubble boy, just missing out on the prize money by one place. William had pocket nines to Andy’s A-K and the money went in on an A-9-4 flop.

As the tournament progressed more and more players fell by the wayside. One of the first to go after the money was Norwegian Johnny Lodden, who exited harshly when he flopped a full house holding 3-3. The flop was 3-9-9 but Nick Slade, who held 6-6, took the pot away from him when a further 9 fell on the river, giving him a better full house.

Marc Goodwin and Dave Clayton also went out soon after the money was reached. Rob Yong from Nottingham went from being a short stack and two cards from being out, to over 200,000 chips and one of the leaders in the space of a few hands, dishing out some nasty beats in the process.

By 2am they had whittled the field down to eight players, losing Roy Brindley, Luca Pagano and Willie Tann along the way. Willie was the 9th place finisher, just missing out on the final table. The players who have made it through to tomorrow’s final are:

David Tavernier

Gavin Simms
George McKeever
Par Bueno

William and Roland are the chip leaders with Rob Yong not far behind.

Meanwhile both Mickey Wernick and JP Kelly were playing in the consolation €500 event, which attracted 224 players. Once again Mickey was taken out when holding pocket queens. Neither player made the prize money, but recent Grosvenor Grand Prix winner Zahir ‘Zippy’ Aslam made the final, along with Alli Mallu and Marcel Luske. As this report was being filed, there were 5 players left and Zippy was the chip leader.

With the clocks going back an hour tonight it means an extra hour in bed. The final commences at 3pm GMT tomorrow. Until then, its time for bed.
